DG VITICULTORS

Catalonia

DG Viticultors, S.L. is a family owned company created in 2006 with the goal of producing wines reflecting the special character of grape vines planted in a particular soil and climate. Our vineyards are located in a mountain landscape in the inner coastal Prelitoral range in Catalonia, Pontons, Alt Penedès; where a variety of different wines can be elaborated. This project is enthusiastically led by Pedro Domènech Garay and Antonio García Blasco, who desire to explore and transform their effort," terroir" and knowledge into wine capable of inspiring emotion.

The history of DG VITICULTORS, S.L. is intimately intertwined with the history of the land and people of Mas Fonoll and Sapera in the wine country of Alt Penedes. The story began in 1991 when Jaime Doménech Trinchant, who believed in the prospects of growing grapevines on a hard land of extreme climate, endeavoured to plant the first vineyards. His son, Santiago Domenech Garay, gave continuity to this endeavour by devoting time to transform this land into a vineyard of extraordinary appeal. Nowadays, Pedro Domènech and Antonio García, supported by their families and the effort of their whole team, are the ones who are further developing this beautiful landscape and producing highly appreciated wines. Since 2011, we are practicing organic farming. We are registered with and certified by CCPAE (Consell Català de la Producció Agraria Ecológica = Catalan Agency for Organic Farming).

The vineyards of Mas Fonoll (mass- foo-noy) and Mas Sapera (sah-peh-rah) are located within the area of Pontons, a small village in the Alt Penedes, in the province of Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. Mas Fonoll and Mas Sapera are two mountain properties at heights between 2.130 and 2.800 feet above sea level. The area of Sapera extends alongside a small valley at the foot of the cliff upon which Mas Fonoll lies. Together they make up some 54ha of vineyard in a total property of over 200 ha. Of the 54ha Sapera occupies 14ha, and Mas Fonoll 40ha. It is all of loam-clay structure, each different lot with varying proportions of stone or gravel. As a whole the soil is poor, shallow and abundant in clay. The climate is cold which favors slow growth of the vines and late maturity of grapes. We harvest in mid December the grapes exhibiting Noble Rot.

Since their wines are so far out of the norms for the DO, they choose to label their production as table wine and are limited to the use of the term “wine” on their bottles.
